Application Process

The admissions season for the 2016-17 school year will begin on September 1, 2015. If you would like to receive more information about MKA, including the school's prospectus, use this form to submit your request or apply online by using the button to your right. Information will be mailed to you promptly.

The MKA Admissions Committee selects students who are likely to find success in our challenging, college-preparatory curriculum.  We consider each candidate separately from all others, looking closely at individual strengths and merits.

The Admissions Committee seeks evidence of a student's academic achievement and personal integrity through a review of objective and subjective data gathered from the student's current school and from the admissions process.  We also look favorably upon an applicant's involvement in the arts, athletics and community service.

MKA welcomes candidates of all ethnic, religious and racial origins and, in compliance with law, does not discriminate in any of its practices.

Age Guidelines

MKA's age guidelines are that boys should be four years old by June 1st of the year they enter pre-kindergarten and girls fours years old by August 1st. For Kindergarten and first grade, the ages are five and six, respectively.  Each child is evaluated based on his or her individual abilities and characteristics. Social fit is also an important criterion at this age.

Schedule A parent conference

Once an application is submitted, we will be in touch with you to schedule your conference.

Schedule A classroom Visit and screening appointment

In November, the Admissions Office begins scheduling appointments for classroom visits and screening interviews.  Applicants visit campus for their appointments in January.

Classroom Visits

Pre-K applicants visit campus on a Saturday in January for 90 minutes of typical Pre-K activities.  Kindergarten applicants visit for approximately 90 minutes in a Pre-K classroom for observation by our Pre-K teachers. First grade applicants spend a full school day visiting a Kindergarten class with their peers.

screening appointments

All applicants are screened individually for school readiness.  The length of the appointment depends on various factors, but generally Pre-K appointments range from 15-30 minutes; Kindergarten from 20-40 minutes; and first grade from 30-45 minutes. Our goal is to assess each applicant's skills and place them within a developmentally-appropriate context.

Request School Records

For those first grade applicants whose kindergarten programs issue school reports, the Transcript Request Form should be signed and submitted to the director or principal's office.

Candidates for Pre-K & Kindergarten may include school reports or their equivalent if their current school issues them.  As many schools and programs for this age group do not, this is not required.

Request Teacher Recommendation

The Teacher Recommendation Form should be given to teachers after mid-November to allow them time to evaluate the applicant in the current year.

Recommendations should be filled out by the classroom or lead teacher and mailed directly to the Admissions Office.

Schedule School Visit and Parent Conference

Upon completion of the application, the Admissions Office will send via email the details for the school visit and parent conference. Applicants to Grades 9-11 should take The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is also accepted.
