The PAMKA Community Well-Being Committee is proud to present another morning of engaging discussion around parenting issues facilitated by local experts on Saturday, March 1 from 8:30 a.m. - noon at the Middle School Campus. There will be a presentation by Dr. Michael Thompson, author of Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys on 11/27/07 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in the Middle School Auditorium, Open to the Public and free of charge. 
Please contact Peggy with suggestions for future topics and/or speakers to bring in for both students and parents.

Campus Specific Information:
BROOKSIDE 
OCTOBER 9 – 12, 2007: COAT DRIVE
Clean out your closets in time to help others keep warm this winter. Please place clean coats, scarves, mittens and gloves in the containers located in the Brookside front lobby. Collected items will be distributed to families in need by St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson.
NOVEMBER 1 – 9, 2007: FOOD COLLECTION This annual Brookside event will benefit the Human Needs Pantry in Montclair. Please make sure donations are non-perishable and think “Harvest”! Please leave food in bins located in the Brookside front lobby.
NOVEMBER 30, 2007: “WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A VOLUNTEER” ASSEMBLY 8:30 a.m. Danielle Speckhart, author of the book “The Littlest Volunteers,” is going to join the students for a reading which will be followed by discussion and reflection on the many different ways we can volunteer. This will be an exciting presentation which will inspire all of us to “build better communities.” Please feel free to contact Amy South (gaamsouth@comcast.net 973.744.7028) if you are interested in purchasing the book for review with your child.
DECEMBER 3 – 7, 2007: MKA GIVING TREE Please pitch in to provide hats and mittens for those without them by sending your child to school with a NEW hat or pair of mittens to hang on our Giving Tree. This year we are also requesting any gently used or new “holiday” books. Collected items will be distributed through the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital network of clinics and day care centers. We are also expanding our collection to include new ladies gloves for the Good Will Rescue Mission.
FEBRUARY 4 – 8, 2008: BOOK DRIVE Please bring in gently used children’s books and leave them on the shelves or in the boxes in the Brookside front lobby. Collected books will be distributed to children in hospitals and day care centers in the Essex County area.
APRIL 23, 2008: GAME NIGHT AND TRI-CAMPUS LITERACY AWARENESS EVENT MKA Middle School Cafeteria 6:30-8:00 p.m. Brookside’s traditional family BINGO Night (part of TV Turnoff-Week) is going to be a tri-campus kickoff to a week of discussing literary awareness with our children. There will be Bingo, Connect 4, Chess, Checkers and more! A guaranteed night of fun for all ages!
APRIL-MAY 2008: CHARACTER EDUCATION KINDNESS BOXES This project is run by the Brookside faculty, and headed by Donna Blanes. The faculty may ask Brookside children to bring in specific items to be included in a “Kindness Box” to be assembled by Brookside students and distributed to children at shelters, clinics, hospitals and other locations. A tour of a Montclair Child Development Head Start facility is scheduled for Tuesday, 10/9/07, from 9:30 am - 10:30 am. Please call Nicole if you are interested in attending the tour. The Seventh Grade will be volunteering at Head Start the second Friday of every month, by homeroom on the following dates:
October 12 - Baldwin Street 9:30-11:30 a.m.
November 9 - Fulton Street 9:30-11:30 a.m.
December 14 - Baldwin Street 9:30-11:30 a.m.
January 11- Fulton Street 9:30-11:30 a.m.
March 7 - Baldwin Street 9:30-11:30 a.m.
April 11 Fulton Street 9:30 -11:30 a.m.

Freshman Day of Community Service: Wednesday, 10/17/07
Leigh Vanderklein Memorial Walk: Thursday, 10/18/07
Diversity Film Series - In its second year, the Diversity Film Series will be headed by US English teacher Nate Burroughs. Each month a movie is presented to provide a platform for discussion about aspects of diversity --- race, gender, religion, sexuality, class. Last year's movies ranged from Whale Rider to Crash. Students and parents are welcome to participate, with US faculty and students leading the discussions. The events for the coming school year are all Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the US library --- 9/25, 10/23, 11/13, 12/18, 1/15, 2/12, 3/4, 4/8 and 5/13. Specific movie titles will be released via the PAMKA Blast.
The Blood Center of New Jersey, Blood Drives are at the Upper School from 10:00 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., on Tuesday, 11/13/07 and Wednesday, 4/23/08.
