About the Upper School
MKA seeks to graduate competent young scholars who are poised, disciplined and articulate, and who will thrive in a college environment. We require a great deal from our Upper School students because we recognize what they are capable of achieving.
Although academic expectations are high in the Upper School, so is the level of support. Beginning in the 9th grade, effective September 2011, the Upper School will offer honors courses in all academic disciplines. Students in next year’s ninth grade will have the opportunity, if recommended, to enroll in English and history honors courses in addition to foreign language, math and science, which have offered honors courses for many years. Faculty are highly accessible and always willing to offer help before, during, and after school. Teaching schedules are posted outside every office door so that students can plan times to stop by and ask the questions that inevitably arise in an environment of academic challenge. In addition, the Math Lab, which is staffed throughout the day, is an extremely valuable resource.
Of course, some of the most powerful and memorable Upper School experiences transcend academics. These include maturing into a true sense of self, marveling at the accomplishments of friends, and forming lasting bonds of community. Sports, the arts, clubs, and service-learning opportunities all offer the chance for students to strengthen these bonds and to experience the pride and thrill of representing their school with their best efforts. Together, students build and celebrate a special school spirit.
In this close and supportive environment, our Upper School students acquire habits of living and learning that will help them find success and satisfaction in college and well beyond.
