Senior May Term
May Term is designed to offer students in their senior year the opportunity to pursue an area of interest starting at the beginning of each May. Designed to be the culmination of a graduate’s MKA experience, May Term provides seniors with some of the freedom they will experience in the future, while still being under the jurisdiction of the school as they pursue areas of particular interest. An individual student's May Term selection will to some extent be determined by his or her own schedule (involvement in AP courses and exams, spring varsity sports commitments, etc.) but all students are required to complete a project involving at least 20 hours per week for the duration of May Term.
May Term offerings fall under four headings: Independent Senior Projects, Teaching Internships, Community Service Projects and Foreign Study Trips.
Independent Senior Projects
Independent Senior Projects allow students to pursue a passion under the guidance of a faculty member. These endeavors may be academic, such as a writing or research project; creative, such as making a movie or painting a mural; or career-based, such as experiencing a unique internship opportunity.
Teaching Internships
Opportunities for interning at either MKA's Primary or Middle School campuses are available for seniors interested in a teaching experience with young students. These seniors assume the full responsibilities of becoming part of an MKA classroom, and are always favorites with their young charges.
Community Service Projects
Seniors interested in community service may apply to participate in a project of their own design, such as volunteering in a hospital or animal shelter, or they may participate in an existing MKA community outreach program, such as with Habitat for Humanity or the Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair.
Foreign Study Trips
In May 2010, foreign study trips will be offered to China and to Ireland. Designed specifically for MKA students, these trips offer rare opportunities to experience cultural and historical highlights not readily available to the general tourist. Foreign study trips may also be supplemented by an accompanying academic course.
