The mission of MKA's Service-Learning Program is to develop in each student, from the youngest to the oldest, an awareness of the needs of the community, and a sense of personal responsibility to actively use their education and talents to help others.
Providing opportunities to learn about community service both within and outside the school community, MKA's Service-Learning Program enables students to participate both in planned service activities, and to initiate and implement service-learning projects that they are passionate about. At the Primary School, there are grade-specific Kindness Projects, in addition to campus-wide initiatives such as coat, food, and book drives. At the Middle School, each grade participates in a service-learning project such as visiting homes for the elderly, or working at the Essex County Food Bank, in addition to all-campus Student Council sponsored projects, such as collecting for special relief needs and Heifer International. At the Upper School, students are encouraged not only to take part in club-sponsored and school-wide service initiatives, but also to develop community outreach projects of their own design to benefit both their local and global communities. Initiatives range from collecting for Breast Cancer research through an annual participation to Denim Day, to working for Habitat for Humanity, to tutoring or running art classes for students at MKA's partner school in Newark, TEAM Academy.
At both the Middle and Upper School campuses, Community Service Awards are given to students in recognition of their service-learning contributions.
