Sharing books with the whole family over the summer months helps your children to develop the habit of reading. We would like to encourage you to continue to read aloud to your child on a regular basis. Research shows that this is invaluable to your child's future academic growth and success in school.
It is our suggestion that you and your children read from a variety of books: picture books, poetry, fairytales, adventure stories and non-fiction books. To help you with book selections, the MKA libraries have provided suggested reading lists to guide your choices. The suggested summer reading lists offer a wide range of annotated stories and genres, including Classics and Core Works. The selected titles offer opportunities to define and explore the character expectations of respect, friendship, responsibility, courage, self-mastery, justice, wisdom and honesty. Choices should be based on each child's interest with regard to the individual reading level. Summer reading lists can be accessed by choosing the appropriate link in the left hand column.
We recommend that you visit the American Library Association website for additional summer reading choices and become familiar with the many award booklists (
www.ala.org). Visiting your public library throughout the summer provides hours of book exploration and new titles for your children to share with their classmates in the fall. The most important ingredient of the reading time is that you and your child enjoy the experience together. Have a wonderful summer!
