The Foreign Language Department provides all students the opportunity
to learn about another culture through the study of French, Spanish or
Latin. In French and Spanish classes, students learn to communicate in
a second, or sometimes third, language. Reading, writing, listening and
speaking skills are emphasized equally to ensure that students develop
all of the skills necessary for effective communication. Students learn
to use the language in practical situations, as well as in academic
settings. In Latin, students have the opportunity to study word origins
and the culture and history of Ancient Rome, as well as the grammar and
vocabulary of the written language.
Courses offered by the department include five levels of French and
Spanish, including AP Language, and five levels of Latin, including AP
Literature. Class placement is determined by department recommendation.
Accelerated courses, designated with an "A" (e.g., Spanish 2A), are
more demanding and proceed at a faster pace than standard courses. A
student who excels in a standard-level course may be recommended for
advancement to the accelerated level.
Through the Foreign Studies program, students may enhance their
knowledge of the cultures studied in their classes. In previous years,
faculty-led trips to France, Spain, Argentina, and Canada have been
offered over the spring break.
