Each of the five facets of the Upper School Fine and Performing Arts
Department program (visual arts, theater, communication, dance, and
music) teaches students to develop, express, and evaluate ideas; think
critically and imaginatively in problem solving; produce and interpret
creative work; understand the artistic achievements of others; and
develop self-discipline and focus. The department encourages students
to take a variety of courses and explore disciplines outside their
usual experience.
Courses include four-year sequences in visual arts, acting and theater,
and dance; and the possibility of a four-year commitment to a
performing group, such as Chorale, Mastersingers, Concert Band, Jazz
Band, or String Ensemble. Additional visual arts courses in sculpture,
photography (including digital photography) and art history are also available to students who meet
course prerequisites. Students who are advanced in the visual arts may
take an Honors or AP Senior Studio course or the interdisciplinary
Advanced Study in the Arts (Honors). Communication courses include
Media Production Design, and Art and History of the American Film. For more information, please refer to the Arts section of this website.
