Homework at Brookside serves as a daily reinforcement for key concepts
taught in the classroom. It promotes confidence, responsibility and
independence - mastery of not just the material but also of oneself.
Homework management teaches self-discipline, goal setting and time
management.
Teachers assign homework in grades one through three, but no
homework is assigned on weekends or holidays. First grade students
should spend approximately 20 minutes per night on their assignments.
Students in the second grade should allow 30 minutes. Third grade
students have approximately 45 minutes of homework each night. Teachers
encourage students to engage in nightly independent reading and to
further explore subjects of individual interest.
Parents are encouraged to help their child with homework in several
important ways. First, they can assist in finding a specific place in
the house to work without distraction from other family members, the
telephone or a television. Once this place is established, the student
will need plenty of materials for work (paper, pencils, erasers, etc.).
Parents may additionally offer homework support by listening, asking
questions and reflecting back information.
