Our purpose in the Middle School is to provide a balance of discipline
and freedom, support and challenge, as students grow through a time of
important academic and personal transition.
The school is divided into two sections, a lower house comprising
grades four and five, and an upper house comprising grades six, seven,
and eight. Students gradually progress from the familiar,
self-contained classroom to the practice of changing classrooms for
different subjects. By sixth grade they have advisors and individual
schedules, and they begin to receive letter grades.
A team of skilled and compassionate faculty guides students from one
step to the next--teachers who understand young people of middle school
age and who love working with them. MKA's focus on character education
plays a critical part in these years, as students begin to grow into
the role of independent individuals and enter more complex social
relationships.
Among the highlights of Middle School are the performing arts
productions, including the sixth grade musical and the seventh grade
Shakespeare production. Other central Middle School traditions include
our camping trips and the eighth grade expedition to Williamsburg to
research the colonial experience. These are each outstanding
opportunities for our students to become more confident in themselves
and more comfortable as members of a close community.
