Students can participate in the Foreign Studies Program both at the
Middle School and the Upper School. The Middle School offers a homestay
exchange program to seventh and eighth graders learning a foreign
language. The goal is to enable students to have a real-life experience
with the language and culture they have been studying. Students can
travel to Mexico or Quebec depending on the language they study, or
participate by hosting a student. In addition, to the exchange program,
a trip to England is being designed to enhance the sixth, seventh, and
eighth grade humanities curriculum which focuses on English Literature
and a study of Colonial Times. The Upper School Foreign Studies Program
provides students with curriculum related trips to different countries.
All trips seek to build upon a classroom experience or integrate a new
academic opportunity in the field. Some trips are designed as a part of
"May Term" for seniors -- in recent years these have included the Irish
Studies and Mediterranean Studies programs (both trips being
culminating experiences for spring semester academic courses), as well
as field programs in Italy, and England/France. There are also
offerings open to all upper school students during Spring Break.
Faculty have recently sponsored spring trips to places such as Greece,
Belize, Argentina, and France. The Upper School Foreign Studies Program
seeks to offer multiple educational travel opportunities for students
each academic year.
