Diversity

We cherish persons in their individuality. We believe that in the richness of our differences, there is strength and opportunity. We know that by recognizing differences, we are bound to have a richer, more joyful, and stimulating school. We value the contributions of each individual. In spirit and activity, policy and program, each person bears the responsibility to work towards a harmonious environment where individual strength of character develops. At the same time, we celebrate the common humanity and heritage that unite us. --Excerpted from Our Common Purpose

The MKA community is a diverse one. Students come from varied backgrounds, ancestries and heritages. We have a substantial minority population comprised of African-American, South Asian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic peoples, among others. Our diversity also lies in the economic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds of our families. We welcome and celebrate the diverse nature of our community, and we seek to ensure that every student feels safe, appreciated, and of value.

We strive to graduate students who take pride in their own backgrounds and who are well-equipped to be successful in a fast-changing, multi-cultural world. Our curriculum exposes students to diverse opinions and experiences, so that every student is challenged to “recognize complexity and value empathy” (MKA’s Mission Statement).

MKA takes a rigorous approach to the education of the whole child. Our Ethics Program, school curriculum, advisor program, and Service Learning program work together to promote a civilized community bound by ties of respect and understanding. Diversity Coordinators at each campus lead MKA in faculty training, community outreach, and student activities that provide opportunities for diversity education.
